On Epigenetics and Evolution Translational Epigenetics Series

Langue : Anglais

Coordonnateur : Guerrero-Bosagna Carlos M.

On Epigenetics and Evolution, a new volume in the Translational Epigenetics series, introduces key themes from current epigenetic evolution research, with contributions from leading scientists around the world that investigate the role of epigenetic mechanisms in evolution from a variety of different angles, with each contribution combining theory, current research overviews, and applications. This book gives researchers, students, and clinicians a better understanding of the origin of genotypic and phenotypic variability, the role of epigenetics in development and inheritance, how epigenetics may affect speciation, and the evolution of epigenetic mechanisms in different taxa, and helps them apply their learnings across new research. Other modalities and subtopics explored include epigenetics in neutral and also adaptive evolution; epigenetic evolution in plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates; and the role of epigenetics in human evolution and its societal impact.

1. Epigenetics in Evolution: State-of-the-art
2. Epigenetics within the Extended versus Standard evolutionary theory discussion
3. Epigenetics as a mechanism for adaptive evolution
4. Epigenetics as a mechanism for neutral or near neutral evolution
5. The interplay between epigenetics and cellular physiology from an evolutionary perspective
6. Epigenetics and Genotypic Variation
7. Epigenetics and Phenotypic Variation and Plasticity
8. Epigenetics and Speciation
9. Epigenetics in Non-Genetic Inheritance
10. Epi-Evo-Devo

19. Epigenetics and Cognition in Evolution20. Epigenetics, Human Evolution and Society

Dr. Carlos M. Guerrero-Bosagna is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Organismal Biology of Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. His teaching and research demonstrate the importance of epigenetics in connecting environmental exposures and non-communicable diseases such as metabolic and reproductive disorders. His research focusses on epigenetics in different experimental models, including lab, farm animals, and humans, investigating what these tells us about epigenetics in stress response, evolution and also human diseases. He has published over 60 scientific articles to-date in peer-reviewed journals, as well as 11 book chapters, and 1 US patent application.

  • Introduces and examines the role of epigenetic modifications in regulating genomic variability, and thus evolutionary biology, across species
  • Draws together key themes across epigenetic evolution in plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates, and the role of epigenetics in human evolution
  • Includes bulleted chapter summaries and key points lists, terms and definitions, and rich use of illustrations where possible to reinforce understanding and actionability of the content
  • Features chapter contributions from international leaders in the field
